KEY INFORMATION
Parallel Architecture Studio proposed interior renovations aimed to transition an existing historic single-family home to a three-family home while maintaining the architectural integrity of the building. To accommodate increased occupants and ensure safety, an external staircase is proposed to the rear of the building to facilitate egress from upper floors during emergencies, subject to Building Standards Board approval.
To preserve the historic character and minimize structural alterations, a portion of the staircase will be located outside the building. The conversion of two smaller dormer windows into a single, wide French casement window will adorn the fifth floor, leading to a spiral staircase leading to an existing roof terrace on the third floor. The spiral staircase will descend parallel to the rear façade, entering the building envelope at the third floor level. This design strategy harmonizes safety requirements with historic preservation, ensuring a seamless blend of functionality and heritage within the building structure.
